The Slave Bible

For hundreds of years, many churches tailored their sermons and their Bible readings to subjects which endorsed obedience and submission to their country's rulers. Most people were illiterate and strategic use of Biblical passages was an effective control mechanism. Passages about freedom and fair play were omitted in churchs which supported authoritarian governments.

In 1807, approximately 10% of The Bible became "The Slave Bible" ---- A tool for control of slaves and indigenous populations in British colonies.

"Select Parts of the Holy Bible for the Use of the Negro Slaves in the British West-India Islands," shared notable commonalities with traditional sermons typical in white churches during the same era.
